Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a scan at Tiny Vision?

Our clinic is designed to feel warm, welcoming and relaxed. Our team are patient, friendly and approachable and will provide time to answer any questions or concerns in a calm environment. The scan will not be rushed. We use advanced ultrasound technology and will take time to explain what you’re seeing on the screen, ensuring you feel comfortable, supported and reassured.

We guarantee you will only be scanned by a trained Sonographer who is medically trained in ultrasound. Our Sonographers are medical professionals with proven ultrasound qualifications and extensive NHS experience and private scanning expertise. Some clinics operate under ’technologists’ meaning they are not registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) or SOR (Society of Radiographers), this also means they do not hold a Post-Graduate, Diploma or MSc in Medical Ultrasound from a CASE registered accredited university course. All of our Sonographers possess these essential qualities. They will hold your hand throughout your journey, each step of the way, answering any questions you may have.

We recommend before booking any ultrasound scan you ask about the qualifications of the Sonographer.

Preparing for your appointment

Please come with a relatively full bladder as this will help us to obtain clearer images, please drink 50ml 1 hour before your scan and do not empty your bladder. Please ensure you eat a snack too 20 mins before your scan to give baby energy to move around.

Please call and inform us if you require us to make any reasonable adjustments for your visit (eg. in the case of visual impairment, limited mobility or language barriers etc).

On arrival, you will be asked to complete and sign our Consent Form. This is a legal requirement, ensuring that we have obtained your consent for us to perform the scan. The consent form also allows us to check that the details we hold are correct and that you understand our terms and conditions. We can also understand what your preferences are with regards to the scan – such as whether you would like us to conceal the sex of your baby in the room or you would like it written down.

Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time to allow sufficient time to complete this.

If you have an infection or illness, please call us before your appointment to inform us. Your appointment may need to be rescheduled, but your payment will not be lost.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing so we are easily able to scan your abdomen or take a blood test.

What is a 4D Scan?
3D scans allow you to see your baby's face and features in the full 3 dimensions. The 4th dimension (which is 'time') added in 4D scans allows you to actually see your baby moving in full 3D imagery inside the womb. This innovative technology provides an amazing opportunity for you and your family to experience the wonders of your baby before it arrives into the world.
Are 4D Baby scans safe?
Yes. 3D and 4D scans use the same Ultrasound technology that the traditional 2D scanning equipment has used for the millions of babies scanned in the NHS over the last several decades. Tiny Vision follows the British Medical Ultrasound Society's (BMUS) recommended scanning settings for all scans. This ensures we follow the A.L.A.R.A. principle, which ensures our Ultrasound scans use the As Low As Reasonably Achievable settings for our scans; meaning the ultrasound output is low but we still get amazing images of your baby.
What if you find something unexpected?

This scan offers the opportunity to view your developing baby - basic health checks of baby will be performed, this means we will check your baby's heartbeat and assess your baby's general health and wellbeing. If our Sonographer spots anything unexpected during this routine check we will provide a wellbeing report to share with your Midwife or medical provider and advise appropriately. Please note our scans are intended for reassurance and limited wellbeing checks only and are not a replacement for routine NHS scans. Our Scans are elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound scans and you must still attend all NHS appointments and antenatal care and diagnostic assessments. It is not a detailed Anomaly scan and cannot detect all abnormalities.

If anything unexpected shows up on the scan, the sonographer will explain the situation to you and will address any concerns you may have, and issue a report for you to take away for your medical provider. We will refer you to your early pregnancy unit/antenatal clinic or fetal medicine unit and provide recommendations and advice on next steps.

At what stage of pregnancy is it best to have a 4D Scan?
For best results of 3D and 4D scans we recommend to arrange a visit between 24 and 34 weeks. However, 4D scans can be carried out from 13 weeks and early 2D scans can be carried out from 6 weeks gestation.
What stage of pregnancy it it best to scan twins?
Twins generally have less space around them so we advise having a 3D / 4D scan a little earlier, at around 24 - 27 weeks.
Do multiple pregnancy/twin scans cost more?
Yes. Due to the extra time required to scan and assess multiple babies, twins or more are an extra £25 per baby.
How old do I need to be to book a scan?
You must be at least 18 years old to book an appointment.
Is the baby scan always successful?

There are several factors that can make it difficult to capture the perfect picture; the position of the baby being the most common (sometimes they just won't smile for the camera). It can also be due to the position of the placenta, reduced amniotic fluid or an elevated BMI of the mother.

Whatever the reason, our sonographers will persevere and use all the tricks in the book to capture that special image for you.

Re-scan policy

In the event the baby is in such a position that we can't capture a good image during your appointment, we will offer you a rescan free of charge (usually within 1-2 weeks of your original appointment). This offer is limited to one extra appointment per client and is at the discretion of the sonographer. A rescan does not guarantee the baby will be in a better position for scanning. (Free rescans are non-transferable and have no monetary value).

How early can I have a pregnancy scan?

At Tiny Vision Ultrasound Clinic you can have an early pregnancy scan from 6 weeks. Before 6 weeks the pregnancy is too small to be clearly seen on ultrasound. The embryo and heartbeat may not be visible yet, even in a perfectly healthy pregnancy. Because of this, scanning too early can cause unnecessary worry and uncertainty.

If you attend a little earlier we can still scan you but we may not see anything. Recommendations include a follow up scan minimum 7-10 days later for clarity and reassurance.

What is a Trans-vaginal Scan?

A TV scan is an internal ultrasound that gives a very detailed view of the womb (uterus and ovaries) and early pregnancy. A trans-vaginal scan involves an empty bladder. You will be asked to remove your underwear and covered to maintain dignity and privacy. A small, slim probe is covered with a protective sheath and lubricated with jelly to make its insertion into the entrance of the vagina gently to provide clearer images. It is usually quick, comfortable, not painful and is tolerated well by most women. It is often recommended in early pregnancy when more detail is needed.

If I book a private scan can I miss my NHS 12 and 20 week scans?

No - A private scan does NOT replace your formal NHS 12 week (dating/combined screening), 20 week (Fetal Anomaly) scan or any early pregnancy or growth scans. We always recommend you attend your NHS Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme and NHS Scans even if you choose additional private scans with us. Private scans are great for reassurance, bonding and seeing your baby in between NHS scans. We complement each other, not instead of each other.

Please note that our scans are intended for reassurance and limited wellbeing checks only and are not a replacement for routine NHS scans. Our Scans are elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound scans and you must still attend all NHS appointments and antenatal care and diagnostic assessments. It is not a detailed Anomaly scan and cannot detect all abnormalities.

How many guests can I bring to my scan?

You are welcome to bring up to 5 guests with you to the clinic (children included). For Early Pregnancy Scans it may be best to leave little ones at home.

Can I purchase extra products on the day?

Absolutely! You can purchase gender reveal cannons, extra scan photos, heartbeat bear to record your baby’s heartbeat.

You will receive x2 Complimentary 2D black and white images after each scan (with 4D scans its an extra x2 colour prints) You can also choose to upgrade to a digital package for £5 extra which includes ALL digital images and videos. These can be purchased in the clinic.

How can I Pay for my scan?

A deposit will be taken at the time of booking online. The remainder of the balance can be paid in clinic by cash or debit/credit card.

Is there parking nearby?

Parking is excellent and located opposite the building (Saturday Market Place. PE30 5DQ), only a few footsteps away. There is a charge for parking (£2.60 for 1 hour).

There is a 20 min free parking space opposite – although you are likely to need longer during your relaxing scan. Alternatively the NCP car park on Church Street (PE30 5EB) is a 1 minute walk, around the corner and costs £1.50 for 1 hour parking.

Is the clinic CQC registered?

Absolutely yes! The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England and the official organisation that monitors, inspects and regulates all health and care services in England - such as hospitals, GP surgeries, private clinics and care homes. It is a strict process with rigid requirements ensuring medical providers are adhering to safety and effective processes - failing to register with the CQC is illegal. Being under CQC regulation gives you extra peace of mind that you are in safe, professional hands.

What happens if I'm late for my appointment?

To ensure all clients’ appointments run to schedule anyone arriving more than 10 mins late for their appointment may not be seen by the sonographer as this will impact other clients’ booked appointments. If you’re running late please call us as soon as possible. We will do our best to help you but sometimes we may not be able to accommodate you and this may result in a shorter scan appointment.

I want to Book/Amend/Cancel my appointment

Sometimes life gets in the way - we understand this. Appointments may be re-scheduled with more than 48 hours notice. To amend or cancel an appointment please call the clinic at least 48 hours before. A refund will be issued.

Rescheduling with less than 48 hours notice is treated as a cancellation and the deposit will be retained in full. This covers staffing and administration. Please ask us if you would like to see a copy of our cancellation policy.

Is ultrasound safe?

Ultrasound technology has been around for more than 40 years; it uses soundwaves ‘not’ radiation to produce an image of your baby. At Tiny Vision we practice the A.L.A.R.A principle, which stands for, As Low As Reasonably Achievable, meaning the ultrasound setting we use is extremely low, but it is still possible to achieve fantastic clear images.

3D / 4D scanning adopts the same approach and practices as a normal 2D scan in pregnancy scanning. The only difference is the equipment and technology used which allows you to see your baby in 3D / 4D and time/movement.
